Marie Harris, Licensed Professional Counselor

I Am Affiliated With The Following National Organizations:

Marie Harris, Licensed Professional Counselor

Marie Harris, Licensed Professional Counselor I hold a Master of Science degree in Mental Health Counseling from Capella University. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, covering the states of Utah and Arizona. I am certified in Prepare and Enrich Pre-Marital and Marriage Counseling. My counseling experience includes work with clients, ages 6 and older. I have a 20-year history working in the human services field, with 10-years working in a variety of mental health counseling settings, including School Therapeutic Day Treatment, School Mental Health Counselor, Intensive In-Home Counselor, and outpatient Licensed Professional Counselor. I offer in-person and virtual counseling. I am affiliated with the American Counseling Association (ACA), National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), the Northern Virginia Licensed Professional Counselors (NVLPC), the Association of Latter-Day Saint Counselors and Psychotherapists (AMCAP), and the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC). I enjoy diversity in personalities, cultures, lifestyles, and issues. I have worked with victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and individuals and families dealing with substance abuse/addiction issues. I have also worked with people suffering with symptoms of major depression, grief, trauma, severe anxiety, ADHD, autism, behavioral disorders, women’s issues, relationship, marital, parenting issues, divorce, as well as phase of life transitions. I am very comfortable with people of all gender identities, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, queer, intersex, asexual, pansexual, and allies (LGBTQIA+). I view therapy as a safe environment designed to enable growth, development, and change. During therapy, I employ two different kinds of knowledge. One involves imparting information. The other kind of knowledge is developing skills and capacities necessary for improving our lives. Acquiring skills is more than learning facts. The nature of developing skills makes it impossible to absorb unless clients participate in the process. My counseling therapeutic approaches are scientifically researched and proven highly effective, such as strength-based, and person-centered treatments. Counseling should surround each client with unbiased acceptance and respect. My work is focused on openness and safety while working together on finding the links to the individual’s chosen solutions. Therapeutic theories and techniques used are EMDR, Prepare-Enrich Marriage and Relationship training, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, and Family Systems Therapy, Mindfulness, and Motivational Interviewing, to name a few. I am eclectic in adding theory and techniques from other scientifically based therapies, as they apply (Gestalt, Reality-Based Therapy, Solution-Focused, Existential…). I believe in lifelong learning and my plan is to never stop with my continuing education as long as I live. I especially enjoy studying Neuroscience and how it connects with our body’s physiology. My free time is spent with our children and grandchildren, and my hobbies include home and furniture refurbishing, arts, crafts, and mosaics. I have plans to learn stained glass art, wood carving, and painting. There is so much that defines how amazing YOU are! That includes ALL that defines you: your strengths, talents, struggles, and suffering. My goal is to assist you in identifying the future path you want and the steps that will be most beneficial for your unique situation.
